Abstract

Background: Effective communication among healthcare professionals is critical for quality care, yet poor verbal and written communication increases patient-related errors. The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a medical call-writing workshop conducted for postgraduate maxillofacial residents. Methods: A Randomized Controlled Trial was conducted at Ayub College of Dentistry, Abbottabad, involving 30 postgraduate maxillofacial residents, who were divided into control and interventional groups. Both groups underwent pre- and post-intervention tests, but the control group did not receive any intervention. The interventional group attended a workshop on medical call writing. The evaluation of medical call writing in the interventional group involved comparing pre- and post-workshop performance using a pre-validated questionnaire. The workshop's effectiveness was assessed using the Kirkpatrick evaluation model levels one and two. Statistical analysis employed paired t-tests comparing pre- and post-workshop scores, and independent t-tests for group comparisons with significance set at a p-value of 0.05 or less. Results: The study involved 30 participants with a mean age of 27.76 years, and a gender distribution of n=5 (17%) male and n=25 (83%) female. The interventional group showed a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores, with a Cohen's d of 3.40, and a learning gain of 46%. The Chi-Square test (p<0.005) indicated a substantial impact on the workshop. Participants provided positive feedback, giving high mean ratings (4.73) for the facilitator's effectiveness and workshop activities. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that a targeted medical call writing workshop significantly enhances the written communication skills of postgraduate maxillofacial residents, highlighting its value for professional development in clinical settings
